This week brought a mixture of hot days and rainy ones. The rainy ones were a treat, but one night seemed kind of stormy…and I hoped the power wouldn’t go out. It didn’t.
After years of not subscribing to the newspaper, I am back to enjoying a paper on the weekends. It feels right, somehow. Coffee and a paper.
I finishing reading and reviewing only three books this week…but that’s how it goes sometimes.

A Snitch in Time (e-book, Book 3), by Sunny Frazier
When sheriff’s department office assistant Christy Bristol takes a long weekend to visit her friend, Lennie, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, it’s not the vacation she anticipated. A murder has just occurred and Christy is conscripted by the homicide team to handle the reports. Oh, me too, Pat (about the power), and even though it hasn’t happened more than three or four times in the eight years I’ve been here, I dread the possibility…LOL. Being without light is scary. I try to have updated batteries for the flashlights.
I think the dread of power failures stems from my childhood when it happened a lot.

My husband and I used to always have the paper and coffee in the morning, a good ritual but the paper in our area is slim on the weekends and not much substance, when we were used to a thick Sunday one. Maybe the print news business in general going downhill? Anyway, I loved a couple of the books you have to read and would like to read The Shore and to Little Black Lies if I get them.

Thanks, Rita, and the Saturday paper (pictured above) is pretty thin…but the Sunday one is still thick, with my favorite Life section, with entertainment, etc. Not as fabulous as the LA Times, though. I also like to have a few old newspapers around to wrap things in, when I’m purging. LOL

I love the morning coffee and paper, especially on weekends. Unfortunately our newspaper isn’t what it used to be. It’s shrunk to just a few pages. Book reviews are gone. Budget cuts have ruined it. But old habits die hard so we still read what little is there. Bittersweet looks intriguing. . .

Yes, it is disappointing to have cuts in the newspapers, but I figure that by subscribing again, I can enjoy (for a little while longer) a ritual that I have been missing: morning coffee and the newspaper. Thanks for stopping by, Susan. I am starting Bittersweet tonight.

Black Eyed Susans looks good. I’ve got Little Black Lies (I think) as well. I’m yet to open it in my reader so the cover isn’t familiar.
I had a slow reading week as well, though had a night at the movies, babysat for a friend another night, had a night with my mum etc… So that’s all okay as well.

WE had the same… hot days (tho not as hot as you I’ll wager) and rainy days, kind of a weird week. We hit 80 today, it’s warming up here. I know what you mean about reading buddies, I think a lot of us got into book blogging to share the love, as it were. Have to talk books with someone! 🙂
I’ve seen Bittersweet before and been curious, will look forward to what you think.

We get the paper 7 days a week, but truth to be told, I usually only browse it through during the weekends or give a quick look to the sports pages when something interesting has happened the day before. 🙂 I wish I could get into the habit of reading newspapers, but I guess I just rely too heavily on the Internet and the heavy, instant news flow it provides 🙂

Here in Nottingham we’ve also had a bit of a mix between sun and clouds but I love storms so I was hoping for one, but no luck so far! Once I get settled in one place I’ll also be subscribing to a newspaper I think, there definitely is something about it! Also, love the mug! I also only got three reviews up but I guess these are our blogs so we get to decide our speed 😉 I hope your next week is even better 🙂

As for the mug…it is part of a Franciscan set called Apple (love that, right?), and I have been eyeing the set for many years. Back in the 60s, it had been around for 25 years or so.
When a neighborhood department store was closing, they had phenomenal sales, and I grabbed up numerous pieces then…along with almost a complete set of English Rose china. Don’t you love sales?
Sad about store closures, though.

A Snitch in Time looks really good. I can’t remember the last time I actually read a real paper. I get all my news online these days.

A Snitch in Time is by an author I know from our Central Valley group…although I haven’t seen her in a while, and stumbled upon this Book 3 of her astrology mystery series. She writes about local settings, but often fictionalizes the names in a quirky way…(the town “Dunlap” becomes “Burlap.”)

The Shore has been on and off my wish list several times already and it hasn’t even been released yet – LOL! It’s off right now because of the violence, but I’ll be curious to hear what you think. Hope you’re enjoying Bittersweet!
I was getting the NYTimes on Sunday, but stopped it when we went to Florida. Now I miss it and think I may have to resubscribe. Could get it digitally, but there is just something special about coffee and a weekend paper.

Yes, digital doesn’t quite do it for me, either…although our newspaper is nothing compared to the Times. When I visit my son in LA, I love reading the LA Times, especially the entertainment section.
I barely started Bittersweet…tired last night! But I’m enjoying it so far.

What a nice and cozy little blog you have over here. I am glad you found way to my blog so I could comment back. We have had a bit of rain this week here in Oregon and I am ready for some sunshine. I get the newspaper on the weekends only so I can curl up with coffee and enjoy the Sunday paper. I also got a copy of Black Eyed Susans, I am hoping it will be a great read.

I don’t take a paper, but I looooove reading the small town newspaper when I visit my Mom in Arkansas. Especially the “society” section where it tells who had a wedding (or some other event) and how they decorated for the reception and what everyone wore, what foods and punch were served, etc. There’s another section where they tell who was arrested and what they’re accused of and yatta yatta. Fascinating!
