THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you read more than one book at once? Why, or why not?

I can’t wait to get my hands on The Children, a novel by Ann Leary.

Blurb:  Charlotte and Sally Maynard grew up in a rambling Connecticut country house that belonged to their stepfather, Whit Whitman. Perry and Spin, Whit’s sons from his unhappy first marriage, were welcomed as weekend guests. All of the children received Whit’s love and attention, but they were also influenced, for better and for worse, by his often misguided ideals and wildly narcissistic personality. When Whit dies, he leaves the estate in the care of his wife, Charlotte and Sally’s mother, with the understanding that the home will revert to Perry and Spin when she passes away. But Joan, a stalwart sixty-something, isn’t going anywhere soon. She’s enjoying the house, which she shares with Charlotte, an agoraphobic mommy blogger, who doesn’t actually have any children. She and her sister have a good relationship, and they’re close, too, with their step brothers. But when Spin, the youngest, brings his beautiful fiancé Laurel Atwood home for the summer, she manages to subtly crack the polite veneer of the family, exposing an array of simmering resentments, old wounds, and troubling family secrets.

Told from the sharp and wryly humorous perspective of the introverted Charlotte, THE CHILDREN examines themes of money, loyalty, trust, and familial love.

I read and loved another book by this author, The Good House, which is supposedly in production as a movie.  Click the title for my review.

As for the random question:  I seldom read more than one book at a time, but when I do, they must be very different.  Different genres, for example.

What are your bookish habits?  What books are intriguing you today?

  1. oooooohhhhh this is like THE question for me Laurel. I’m such an ADD reader! I didn’t use to be like this! but I’m just getting worse and worse. I’m reading 6 books right now! I’m still very into dystopian but I’m looking for more realistic heroines. I think we have gone too far with making our female characters strong. They don’t seem real anymore to me. I’m also into books becoming movies so I’ll be checking The Good House!

  2. I love Monday Musings because I get to see books people are reading that aren’t exactly “hyped”. That book looks very interesting. I secretly love books where “perfect” families fall apart. Enjoy!

  3. Whoa, really?? You only read a book at a time? Haha, that’s such a different concept for me – I always have to read multiple books at a time, because usually I tire of reading one book (unless its a SPECTACULAR book). I think right now, I’m reading 6 books at a time? But that’s the most I’ve ever had it haha xD

    1. I sometimes read two at a time, Geraldine, but because I am “writing” my reviews via my note-taking as I go along, I don’t want to make my task more complicated…

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your SIX book marathon. lol
