WEEKLY UPDATES: A LOT OF READING!

Good morning! Today’s post will link up to The Sunday Salon, The Sunday Post and Stacking the Shelves, for weekly updates.

**Mailbox Monday is hosted at the home site: Mailbox Monday.

And let’s join Kathryn, our leader in It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, at Book Date.

What a week!  It was too hot to go anywhere, so I holed up inside…and when I looked up again, I discovered that I had read and reviewed FIVE books.  My Read the Books You Buy Challenge now totals 56.  One of my reads was an “Old Dusty TBR book” (from 2014), so it didn’t count for this challenge.

I started a new Netflix show called The Doctor Blake Mysteries….and I’m not sure about it yet.  I am loving Season Three of Broadchurch, on BBC-America.  I watched the first two seasons on Netflix a while ago.

Since I’ve been indoors most of the week (not counting supermarket visits!), I need an outing, so I’m planning to see the movie The Hero, with some oldies like Sam Elliott, Katharine Ross (remember her from The Graduate?), and someone more current:  Laura Prepon, from OITNB.

***

Early this morning, I recorded a movie I always love to watch over and over:  The Company You Keep, with Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie…and Sam Elliott.  Younger characters that may be familiar to some of you:  Shia LaBeouf and Anna Kendrick.  I also have the book…but haven’t read it yet.

***

So…looking forward to the weekend.  Now I’ll grab some more coffee, and share what happened last week…in more detail.  I wrote TEN blog posts.

That Sam Elliott movie looks good. I haven’t seen him in anything in forever. And Broadchurch I hear good things about- I’m debating starting that once I finish up Shetland. And five books- nice!

The Bookshop on the Corner- such a nice cover. And The Bookshop at Water’s End- that one also. And I think I need to go on vacation to that place on the cover of The Summer House! 🙂

    Mmm dessert…

    1. I just watched him last year in a “chick” movie with Blythe Danner, LOL. It was called I’ll See You in My Dreams, and Sam Elliott was a hit with all the older ladies in the film.

Mostly he plays aging hippies, I think; he’s also in the Netflix show, The Ranch, with Debra Winger, Ashton Kutcher, etc.

Today I watched him on my DVR in a movie The Company You Keep, with Robert Redford, Julie Christie, etc. Aging hippies in that movie.

      You get the picture.

I’ve barely started The Bookshop at Water’s End, but so far so good.

Enjoy your week, and that strawberry shortcake was unbelievably delicious.

  2. Wow, 5 books in one week. That’s great. I have a few of those books waiting for me to read. I’m reading The Child now and it’s good, so far. I read The Bookshop on the Corner and enjoyed that. I hope The Hero is a good one. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Yvonne, my usual number is three…so I was pleasantly surprised when I realized. I blame the heat. I couldn’t move off the couch all week…LOL.

I can’t wait to start The Child. I need to finish a couple of NetGalley review books first, I think…or at least one of them.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting.

  3. I picked up Mrs. Saint and the Detectives as my Prime pick too, I am hoping it’s good. I love Broadchurch we have been watching it on BBC America too. I skipped the US version. Hope it cools off soon! Happy reading in the meantime.

    1. Thanks for visiting, Kimberly, and I’m glad for another season of Broadchurch.

I’m hoping to enjoy Mrs. Saint…I don’t often read the freebies, although I pick some that sound good to me. Somehow I get caught up in the ones I bought and the review books. Maybe this one will keep calling to me.

      Happy reading!

Woah that is some nice reading! I wish to read 5 books this week too as I am co-hosting a readathon on IG with my friend with that goal only, 5 books in 1 week hahaha. The shows sound good! Lovely stack of books too!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. I love strawberry shortcake, but have to remind myself that treats are for special occasions, and not something to eat everyday…LOL.

Good luck catching up on the reviews, Evelina; I wouldn’t be able to remember details if I waited, which is the main reason I do mine right afterwards. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks for visiting, Lexxie, and enjoy Wonder Woman. I’ve heard good things about it.

As for The Hero, I really want to see it…but it is at a different theater than my favorite, and out in the middle of a parking lot…no restaurants nearby. I like to have lunch and stroll over. Maybe I’ll eat at home and go. Sigh. See how I’m talking myself out of going?

      Have a great week!

  5. Wow.. Five books. That’s great. I wish that would happen to me more often. LOL!! I haven’t heard about ‘The Company You Keep’ before. I’ll have to check the movie out sometime.
Have a great week and happy reading!

    1. Thanks for visiting, Maureen…The Company You Keep came out in 2012…you might find it on a channel, if you have movie features…or perhaps on one of the streaming services. It is definitely on DVD.

I just love it because of Redford and the actors I remember from back in the day…and the issues of protest, which I lived through. No bombing for me, though.

Enjoy your week, and reading 5 books is rare for me. The heat kept me indoors reading.

    1. Thanks, Emma, I love watching no matter where I find it, but I’m used to binge-watching. Since it is on a weekly network showing instead of Netflix, I have to wait a whole week for each new episode!

I accidentally read that many…it was hot, and I couldn’t move except to reach for another book. LOL

      Enjoy your week!

    5 books! That’s awesome!

I always get hungry when I see your food pics. I could go for some of that right now. LOL Hope you have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Aleen, and the best thing about the books: they were all “out of my usual genre,” which made the experience a lot of fun.

I know what you mean about the food pix…sigh. Enjoy your week!

  7. The heat certainly is good for something–more reading time. I am at least glad you have been able to enjoy your books, even if not the weather. Our weather here was cooler this week than it had been last week, thankfully. Still hot, but not as hot. I have only seen the first season of Broadchurch so far. One of these days I’ll catch up. Mrs. Saint and the Defectives sounds good. I went with another of the choices this month that caught my attention. I had passed on the last two months selections because nothing really caught my eye and then this month, several did. Go figure.

I hope you have a great week, Laurel-Rain. Happy 4th of July!

    1. I seldom pick one of the Kindle First books…and then they sit on my Kindle for a while, waiting their turn. But I think this one will be picked up soon.

Thanks for visiting, Wendy, and today I drove to a nice cold theater for a two hour movie. One for us “oldies,” with Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross, along with some younger people. The Hero.

      Enjoy your week!

I’m all caught up on Doctor Blake and Broadchurch. Have you tried Shetland yet? It’s really good. And I see some great reads. I need to do some shopping. I’ve spotted so many good ones on Sunday Posts today! Have fun reading and Happy 4th!

    1. I added Shetland to my queue…and then I found out that another show I love, the Australian show called Offspring, has added another season!

That, in addition to Gypsy, should keep me busy…and I’ll try Shetland, too.

I always have to keep notes of the seasons and episodes so I’ll know what I’m watching…LOL.

Thanks for stopping by, Laura. Happy week and happy 4th!

    1. Thanks, Sarah, and I’ve only watched one episode of Dr. Blake so far, but I’m liking it.

I am eager to have another good reading week. Today I went to a nice cool theater for a two-hour movie with Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross, et. al. It was good!

      Enjoy your week!

Sorry to hear it was hot again for you. The weather here in Sacramento has cooled down to the 90’s but it’s better than having the 100 degrees from a couple weeks ago. Wow, you read 5 books! That is great and I’m going to start Julie Mulhern’s series soon. I hope you have a great week and July 4th!

    1. Thanks, Kathy, I really love Mulhern’s series. The books fly by. Enjoy! I think we have dipped into the 90s today, too, although it is still too hot.

Enjoy the week, and thanks for stopping by.

    1. I am enjoying The Bookshop at Water’s End, although I didn’t read anything on it today. I went to the movies, and didn’t take my Kindle, as it needed charging. So I took a print book along, Love Letters, by Debbie Macomber. When I go to the movies, I have lunch first, and need a book for that part of the adventure. LOL.

Enjoy your week and your reading, Laura. Thanks for visiting.

  10. That dessert is like strawberry shortcake? I want to make that! I’ve been busy power walking 2 mi in the early morning and then dropping off the girls at math class and then picking them back up as class is only 1.5 hours. Then I try to take them somewhere for a bit, like get Jamba or hit a bookstore or grab crepes. We’re not traveling this summer as we need to work on the house but it’s been hard to get that going since it’s been hot at times. I don’t really want to paint on a 80+ day b/c then I’ll have to open the windows which lets in that hot air. And my husband wants to mulch the front himself in that weather? Crazy. Glad you had a good week of TV and reading and eating.

    1. Thanks, Stefanie, and hot weather, even 80s, is not compatible with work, IMO. That’s how I justify being lazy when it’s hot. LOL.

Enjoy your week, and I hope you find a day that works for painting, mulching, whatever. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Thanks for visiting, Sarah, and I don’t go to the theater as much as I once did, but whatever I miss on the Big Screen, I try to find on Amazon Prime, Netflix, or On Demand. My oldest two sons and I love the movies and spent a lot of time going when they were teenagers. My second son works in the movie industry in LA, so when he calls, we talk about what we’ve seen lately.

Enjoy your week…and how great that your daughter got to go to drama camp. Cross country sounds good, too.

    1. Good to know that you enjoyed The Child, Kay, and I’m trying to decide how long I can wait before starting it. I know that I must read a couple of my July NetGalley ARCs first….

I didn’t watch any Doctor Blake this weekend, as I found a new season for Offspring, one of my favorite Australian family shows.

      Enjoy your week!

I’m loving The Bookshop at Water’s End, but sadly I can’t enjoy the cover while reading, since it’s an e-book. Sigh.

Broadchurch is great! Have a great week.
