MY BOOKISH (AND NOT SO BOOKISH) THOUGHTS: EMBRACING CHANGE?

Welcome to another Thursday, and the ramblings that make up My Bookish (and Not So Bookish Thoughts), hosted by Bookishly Boisterous.

Did you all have a wonderful holiday season?  I know that I ate too much, and my adorable grown kids gave me boxes of chocolates, among other things.  What were they thinking?

My daughter’s gift card for Cheesecake Factory came in handy yesterday, when I had a long, decadent lunch with an old friend.

Another benefit of the New Year…I had made a resolution to upgrade my phone, so last Saturday, I bought my iPhone 5s, my first ever smartphone.  At first I was frustrated, as everything was so different, but by the time I started taking pictures, sending them, and finally getting the hang of the texting…I was in.  And last night I finally added Facebook to my phone.

My phone now has a name:  Phoebe.

I think I am always the last person on earth to move on up technologically.  I got my first VCR (remember those?) in 1984, after everyone else had them.  And my DVR in 1999.

I got my Facebook page in 2008…the year I started blogging.  I love both of those experiences.

So there you have it…oh, and my Kindle in 2010, but only because my daughter gave it to me for Christmas.  I love it, of course, my dear Sparky…and now I will soon upgrade that device.

How do you face technological change?  Do you embrace it, or lag along until you see how everyone else is managing?  That last one is me.  LOL

On the bookish front, I was examining my pages on Curl up and Read, where I document books read, purchased, and review books read…and discovered an interesting fact (for me, anyway).

While I read and reviewed 181 books in 2014, 88 of them were review books from authors, publishers, and Amazon Vine.  The rest, of course, were books I purchased, not necessarily in 2014.  We went over those numbers in this post:  New Year’s Eve Thoughts, in which I diagnosed myself with Compulsive Book Buying Disorder.

I purchased 151 books in 2014!

I am trying to do better…someone once told me that “trying is lying,” and that sticks in my craw, a little bit.

But here’s the evidence so far:  I have downloaded three books this year so far.  Now downloads don’t count, do they?  LOL

That’s what I tell myself as I click away.  But maybe I have curbed my impulses a little bit.

On the review front, I have received three review books so far, and all of them came this week.

Today I’m reading a book on Sparky that I downloaded last year:  Betrayed, by Lisa Scottoline.

Blockbuster author Lisa Scottoline returns to the Rosato & Associates law firm with Betrayed, and maverick lawyer Judy Carrier takes the lead in a case that’s more personal than ever.  Judy has always championed the underdog, so when Iris, the housekeeper and best friend of Judy’s beloved Aunt Barb, is found dead of an apparent heart attack, Judy begins to suspect foul play.  The circumstances of the death leave Judy with more questions than answers, and never before has murder struck so close to home.

So that’s my bookish (and not so bookish) world.  What does your world look like today?

  1. My husband says he doesn’t want a phone that’s smarter than he is — and I agree! But I’m sure we’ll both get smart phones soon to replace our flip phones. I’m definitely a member of the wait-and-see club, like you are. Except when it comes to books. In that case, I’m also a compulsive book buying addict. I don’t really want to be cured. Do you?

    1. No, I secretly cling to my love of book buying, while lamenting how much I need to curb the impulse. And yes, it’s different with technological devices…they make me crazy whenever I get them…and then I can’t live without them.

But I don’t want to always have the phone out, doing things on it, texting, like my kids and grandkids do! Thanks for stopping by, Sandra.

  2. My smartphone and I are connected..we are besties and go everywhere together. My kids laugh because I am more socially connected on mine then they are..alas I have not named mine. As for books purchased..I have no idea and have no intention of looking. Denial is a good thing!

    1. Perhaps I should live in Denial…LOL. I only created my Curl up and Read blog to help me document reading my way through those humongous piles…I had 166 unread books when I started it. I did that…and except for the last ten books of the original pile, that I have since given away, my piles now are newer. And not so big.

But…now Sparky has too many books unread on it, but I tell myself that the numbers are not hurting anyone, and those books are not crowding me out of house and home.

      Thanks for stopping by, Kimba.

  3. I am a technology junkie and so are my husband and kids. It’s actually become somewhat of a problem with my boys. I recently told them to turn off the computer, tv, video games, etc and go play with their toys. They looked at me like I had grown another head. I realized that my kids don’t even know how to pretend! They’re so used to things being on a screen. I’ve realized how sad that is and this year I’m going to limit their use of technology quite a bit.

As for me, my phone is pretty much connected to my body. lol

    1. Yes, I have limited my technology to DVRs, Netflix, and my laptop, with all of the social networking that goes with it, but I must admit that I have envied my kids and grandkids those smart phones. But I also feel a little squeamish when I see how much they depend on them.

On the other hand, I am glad for their savvy, as I took my teenaged daughter with me to get the iPhone…and she gave me some lessons afterwards. And told me to call anytime with questions. LOL

      Thanks for stopping by, Cherie.

It took me a little while to jump on the iPhone train, but now I love it and never want to go back! I was very against Kindles the first couple of years they were out, then when I got it as a gift, and saw how handy and easy to multitask it was, I fell in love. Now I don’t go anywhere without it, and I’ve had 3 different types since. 🙂

I have not been to Cheesecake Factory in years and I LOVE that place!

  5. I am not a tech-savvy person, but my husband is much more than me and he likes his toys! I have a Kindle Fire, Kindle Paperwhite, a desktop computer, a netbook, and an iPhone myself.

Glad you got Phoebe. I just got my new phone a few weeks ago when the kids upgraded and put me on their plan for a small monthly fee. My phone doesn’t have a name, but if it did it would be a swear, since that is what I call it when I try to figure out how to use it, lol!

I enjoy Lisa Scottoline– I’m sure that book is a great read for you.

    1. Ha-ha…I was doing plenty of swearing the first couple of days, Rita; I was about to give up. Thanks to my teenaged granddaughter Fiona, however, I got past the worst of it…I think.

You are way ahead of me with your Kindle Fire and Kindle Paperwhite….Thanks for stopping by. And I definitely enjoy Scottoline…eager to make some progress with this one. I’ve been distracted most of the day.

  6. I’m usually pretty behind in technology too. I didn’t get an ereader until 2011 and didn’t have a smart phone until late 2012. I just got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and it’s our first tablet ever. I guess I kind of get used to using what I have and don’t feel in a rush to try something new.

    1. That has been my usual way, too, Denise…if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. And I hate struggling with new technology…I like feeling competent. LOL

I am excited about moving to a Kindle Fire, though. Thanks for stopping by.

  7. Wow at the 151 books you purchased last year! I dread to count how many I bought last year, but I’m so happy that I’m starting to go through the TBR stack 🙂 It’s a good exercise to curb the purchasing a bit (or so I keep telling myself so far, lol).

Yay for your new iPhone 🙂 Hope you’re having a lovely weekend!
