Welcome to another Waiting on Wednesday event, hosted by Jill, at Breaking the Spine.
Every week, we gather around the blogosphere and search out the upcoming book releases, sharing our thoughts and blurbs. Today’s featured book will be released on October 11, 2016. Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things is Picoult at her finest—complete with unflinching insights, richly layered characters, and a page-turning plot with a gripping moral dilemma at its heart.
Blurb: Ruth Jefferson, a labor and delivery nurse, begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone on the ward. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?
Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender, takes her case, but Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible—especially for her teenaged son. And as the trial moves forward, Ruth and Kennedy come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong.

What do you think? Do the gripping issues reel you in, or put you off? I know I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

I’m curious as to where this story will take the characters. Jodi Picoult’s books are always issue-oriented in some way. Nice pick!

Sounds like it will be a really deep and powerful book. I’ve heard more on her other book I believe she wrote with her daughter that I’ve thought about picking up but it sounds like she has a wide range. Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by, Eve…the book she co-wrote with her daughter will probably appeal more to those who enjoy YA and fantasy. I don’t really, so it was kind of a “meh” read for me. I prefer her books for adults…those with issues.

Thanks for mentioning this book to us! I didn’t hear about it yet, but the story sounds good, though possibly implausible. Would a hospital really tell the nurse not to handle the baby? Did they really want the couple’s money so badly to set that precedent. I’m curious as to what direction she takes in this book. I used to auto-buy her titles and loved the early ones, until I saw that she could also be somewhat formulaic in her plots. But that’s okay if the story is one I’m really interested in, as this one is. Good choice!
