Welcome to winter in Three Pines, a picturesque village in Quebec, where the villagers are preparing for a traditional country Christmas, and someone is preparing for murder.
No one liked CC de Poitiers. Not her quiet husband, not her spineless lover, not her pathetic daughter—and certainly none of the residents of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers managed to alienate everyone, right up until the moment of her death.
When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, of the Sûreté du Quebec, is called to investigate, he quickly realizes he’s dealing with someone quite extraordinary. CC de Poitiers was electrocuted in the middle of a frozen lake, in front of the entire village, as she watched the annual curling tournament. And yet no one saw anything. Who could have been insane enough to try such a macabre method of murder—or brilliant enough to succeed?
With his trademark compassion and courage, Gamache digs beneath the idyllic surface of village life to find the dangerous secrets long buried there. For a Quebec winter is not only staggeringly beautiful but deadly, and the people of Three Pines know better than to reveal too much of themselves. But other dangers are becoming clear to Gamache. As a bitter wind blows into the village, something even more chilling is coming for Gamache himself.

An irresistible debut novel about the wisdom of the very young, the mischief of the very old, and the magic that happens when no one else is looking

Millie Bird, seven years old and ever hopeful, always wears red gumboots to match her curly hair. Her struggling mother, grieving the death of Millie’s father, leaves her in the big ladies’ underwear department of a local store and never returns.

Agatha Pantha, eighty-two, has not left her house—or spoken to another human being—since she was widowed seven years ago. She fills the silence by yelling at passersby, watching loud static on TV, and maintaining a strict daily schedule.

Karl the Touch Typist, eighty-seven, once used his fingers to type out love notes on his wife’s skin. Now that she’s gone, he types his words out into the air as he speaks. Karl’s been committed to a nursing home, but in a moment of clarity and joy, he escapes. Now he’s on the lam.

Brought together at a fateful moment, the three embark upon a road trip across Western Australia to find Millie’s mother. Along the way, Karl wants to find out how to be a man again; Agatha just wants everything to go back to how it was.

Cody and Meg were inseparable…
Until they weren’t.

When her best friend, Meg, drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, and some secrets of his own. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question.

    1. Katherine, I recently read Book One and I was hooked. Love the characters and the way the head detective, Gamache, approaches the cases. So I want to read them all. And I see that this one is in the same setting as Book One, in Quebec.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope the months don’t fly by quite so fast, either.

    1. Thanks, Greg, and I was surprised at how much I am loving Fangirl…especially since I am not a big YA fan…LOL. But I loved Rainbow Rowell’s two adult books, so why not love her YA? Glad you could stop by, and I do love the new look of the shelves, too.

  1. A Fatal Grace looks quite good and I adore Krentz. If February gets us closer to spring..then I am excited..lol. We are getting 7-9 inches of snow right now. Our son just called from the movie theater where his car is stuck..ugh.

    1. Oh, no! I have never lived in a place that snowed, but I have heard and seen enough to know I’m happy here in California, despite our hot summers. And parts of California are not that hot, so I might even move farther north at some point. Enjoy that new baby!

I loved Louise Penny’s first book, so I’m looking forward to this one…and the Krentz book, too.

Yay for Fangirl! I hope you’re enjoying it. I’m a big fan of RR books. I’m interested in what you’ll think of the new Foreman book. I’ve seen reviews all over the board and I’m not sure I’m going to try it. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Brandie, and I am loving Fangirl. I read RR’s adult books first and loved them…so I decided to go for it.

As for Forman, I’ve only read If I Stay, and I wasn’t sure about this one…but we’ll see.

  3. I still haven’t gotten around to reading Louise Penny, although I want to. I’m going to add her name to the list of 10-12 authors I want to try in 2015. I’m curious to find out what you think of Lost & Found, which I read at the end of last year. I’m also curious about I Was Here–it seems to be popping up all over the place.

Have a great week and enjoy your upcoming reads.

    1. Thanks, Catherine; I am happy I tried Louise Penny, as I am now hooked. I want to read them in order, and it isn’t that easy to figure out the order, as sometimes the product page tells us which book it is…and sometimes, it doesn’t. Sigh.

I have heard good things about Lost & Found….

      1. Amazon is useless for series info but goodreads is excellent! I use goodreads all the time to check if a book is part of a series and if so, where does it fall? It’s one of the best things about goodreads. IMO.

    1. Oh, that’s good to know, Bryan, as I also have Eleanor and Park. I am loving Fangirl, except for the Simon Snow excerpts, which don’t do much for me. But I am really rooting for Cath and hate her twin for “abandoning” her, although I can also understand why. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. What no talk of movies today? I saw Selma last night and I’m still thinking over it. I’d definitely like to introduce myself to Louise Penny books. I have 2 on my shelf waiting for me. How many of hers have you read?

    1. I keep waiting for Still Alice, but it hasn’t shown up in my city. Did I get the dates wrong? I thought it was coming mid-January.

It sucks living in a city that doesn’t get movies right away…sigh.

I do want to see Selma, at some point. I have only read Book One in Louise Penny’s Gamache series….so far.

      Thanks for stopping by, Susan.

    1. Oh, me too, Lexxie, and I bought Fangirl last January…it has taken a long time to get to it. I think I was afraid I wouldn’t love it, since it’s YA….but I am so rooting for the MC….

      Thanks for stopping by.

  5. I really enjoyed Still Life so I need to get to A Fatal Grace soon as well. It looks like you have lots of great reading ahead of you. I used to read Kellerman’s books all of the time but I haven’t picked one up in years. I need to change that! Have a great week!!

    1. Thanks, Cheryl, I am already hooked on the Louise Penny series, and I am enjoying reading from my stacks (as well as those on my Kindle); finding hidden treasures there. I just finished Fangirl last night; it was great. Thanks for stopping by.

I’m keen to read Fangirl, I loved Eleanor & Park and I’ve got I was Here coming up soon. Most curious about Lost and Found, I have a feeling Brooke Davis is an Aussie author but I haven’t seen reviews for the book. Have a great week and happy reading 🙂

  8. Here lately, the only purging I’ve been doing is of the books I’ve read. I need to go through and get rid of some others. I have yet to read any of Penny’s work but have heard a lot of great things about it.

    1. I think I am done purging the books I didn’t read…there weren’t that many, but I feel guilty even saying it. But some of them I’d had for more than ten years!! Ridiculous. LOL

Thanks for visiting, Kathy, and I read the first of Penny’s series a couple of weeks ago, and now I’m hooked.
