Richard Yates is a favorite and Cold Spring Harbor is very good, but like all of his books it’s on the depressing side. Not sure if you like literary biographies, but A Tragic Honesty: The Life and Work of Richard Yates by Blake Bailey is outstanding. It gets my highest recommendation!
